Coordination Team
The coordination team is in action all year round to ensure that all participating communities access the resources and support necessary to deploy all programs. Those who make a difference by their commitment and expertise are:
Team leaders and local guides
Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus programs exist and thrive thanks to the commitment of passionate team leaders and local guides. Teachers, hunters, fishermen or educators: dozens of members of Nunavik’s 14 communities devote their time and energy to providing safe, enriching activities for young people. Beyond their roles within the organization, they play a key role in the development of the region’s young people and are inspiring role models for their future.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
A special thank you to all the volunteers in every community who are not afraid to put their shoulder to the wheel when it’s time to prepare the food before setting off on an expedition, organize the departure and arrival in the community, check that the equipment is in good condition, and perform all the little tasks that make a big difference.
Follow our story from the very beginning
The cross-country skiing expedition of 4 adventurers from Montreal to Kuujjuaq, known as Projet Karibu, serves as an inspiration for a group of students from Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq, who express their desire to spend more time on the Nunavik land and push their physical limits.
In response to the enthusiasm for Projet Karibu, an annual leadership program was created with the goal of providing participating youth the opportunity to experience a skiing expedition. Over the course of the year, 15 young people took part in the program, 7 of whom embarked on the expedition adventure.
The success of the pilot project led to the creation of the charitable organization Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus. Four northern communities took on the challenge of formalizing the program and making it accessible to more youth. A total of 50 young people joined the program, with 30 participating in one of the expeditions.
Continuous efforts led Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus to offer the Nurrait program in all 14 communities of Nunavik. In 2020, 12 communities took part in the annual program, representing 246 students and 7 trainees involved in the Tuttuit program.
The dedication and adaptability of Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus during the pandemic made it possible to maintain the delivery of all 3 programs across all communities. The 14 communities remained active in the Nurrait program, 7 interns participated in Tuttuit activities, and 2 kayaking projects, along with a grief workshop, were completed during the first year of the Ikaartuit program.
Since then, the Nurrait, Ikaartuit, and Tuttuit programs have been offered in all communities of Nunavik: daily activities, immersive internships, and summer and winter expeditions engage and empower the youth. Their sense of self-determination is strengthened through a connection to the land, traditional activities, and the interpersonal bonds developed through Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus programs.
