Ikaartuit
Intensive psychosocial intervention program
To progress
Young people aged 14 to 30 in situations of psychosocial vulnerability
The Ikaartuit program was created in the hope of diversifying our customer base, offering a greater variety of activities and maximizing our service offering throughout the year. The program aims to develop greater self-awareness among participants, focusing on identifying personal strengths, developing coping strategies and setting goals.
Ikaartuit offers 2 summer programs:
- A carpentry vocational integration internship lasting approximately 30 days, culminating in the construction of a cabin.
- An immersive 10-day kayaking experience where nature and adventure-based interventions take on their full meaning.
Participants take part in a series of activities over the course of 10 to 30 days:
- Leadership and team-building activities.
- Introduction to outdoor sports.
- Camping trip to practise traditional activities.
- A week-long expedition in Nunavik or a construction project.
- Celebration with family and friends.
- Individual follow-up with each participant.
Ikaartuit, a powerful short film
In the summer for 2022, Nurrait | Jeunes Karibus was honoured to collaborate with producer, photographer, and explorer Annie-Claude Roberge’s project to produce a short film about Ikaartuit.
This 22-minute film features 8 teenagers and young adults from Kuujjuaq, Kangiqsualujjuaq, and Kangirsuk as they embark on a 2-week kayaking adventure on the Koksoak River. The Inuit teenagers will go kayaking to discover their territory, the Nunavik (Quebec), but also their identity, what drives them and defines them as human beings. Through kayaking, a traditional activity, and total immersion in nature for several days, they will learn to overcome their difficulties, discover their strengths and—above all—create meaningful connections with their peers and their environment.
Available in English and French, the short film Ikaartuit was presented at the 34th International First Peoples’ Festival.
